Book Report

So um, I've read a few books lately and thought I would share.
First up...
I bought this because Sara said that she heard it was good and told me to read it and report. Then a little while later, Aly said, "Yeah, so you should read The Other Bolero Girl and tell us how it is." I laughed really hard. So anyways, I got it about two weeks ago, just to have something to fill my time when not studying, and accidentally got really into it and had to make myself stop reading so that I could do school stuff. But I finished it last night and it was really good. It is kind of scandalous...and a little racy, like not something I would suggest reading for ward book club or anything. But it is captivating, and the almost 700 pages flew by. If you read it, be prepared to be somewhat amazed/appalled/shocked at times. But like I said, kind of scandalous so don't judge me for liking it so much. And now we are going to watch the movie because Philip really likes (LOVES) Natalie Portman.
...
Next up...
Meh. First off, it is about a girl being raised by her white trash and super dysfunctional family and how her parents chose to be basically homeless. It sounds more interesting than it really is. The first few chapters were interesting and whatnot, but it just dragged on and I got tired of hearing about her growing up and I got tired of her family. It was only a couple hundred pages and it took me two months to read. One good thing though is that it has short chapters. I really like short chapters.
...
And lastly...

Yes it's SciFi, and no it's not a Choose Your Own Adventure. I really REALLY liked this book. It is kind of a Harry Potter-esque type story but it is set in the future and is about a brilliant boy and him going to flight/space school. I was quite amazed at the fact that though it was written in the 70's, it didn't seem cheesy futuristic like with flying cars and robot dogs and stuff. I thought it was as realistic as SciFi can basically be and I really liked the character and that he wasn't made out to be perfect or anything. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

Sooo, I'm looking for a new book or four to read on my two week break coming up. Does anyone have any suggestions? And please don't suggest Stephanie Meyer stuff, because I never read Eclipse because I was tired of Bella by the end of the second book, and I don't want to read The Host because I'm not in the mood. But other than that, I'm up for almost anything.

Have a good weekend friends.

My Ted is in love with "Ender's Game". He got me hooked too. You should read the book called "Ender's Shadow" it is the same story as "Ender's Game" but it is taken from Bean's perspective. It is amazing and twice as good as "Ender's Game". We love it so much we want to name one of our babies Ender haha!

My friend is reading "The Other Boleyn Girl" and loves it too..and also thinks it is scandalous. I am sold haha.

Ted loves Natalie Portman too and wants to see the movie for that reason. (rolls eyes)

I love love all books that have to do with Henry the eight and his wives so if you want to read a couple of short books Carolyn Meyers writes about all of the women surrounding Henry the Eighth and its from their perspective. Very entertaining. Its in the Young Adult section so pretty easy reads. She writes a lot of other historical fiction stories about other subjects that you might like too.

If you are bored with that story and want something new, there is another set of books I absolutely LOVE (like top 20) that is by an author named Lynn Austen. She writes about three girls during the civil war time whose families all intertwine as you read about them but not so much that you get bored of hearing about the same people. The first book is from the girl in the South's perspective, then the second is the girl who lives in the North and then a Slaves perspective. The author is Christian so there is that Christian undertone through the whole book but not overly done and each story has a romantic story line in it too which makes them so good. I totally couldn't put them down and would stayed up until 2 in the morning reading them.

If you have read Gone With the Wind there is a book out right now called Rhett Butler's people. It was approved by the Margret Mitchell foundation to be written by the Author so its not some knock off. Its all about Rhett Butlers side of the story and it goes into a lot of back story of Rhett's life.

On a totally different note: there is a British author named Sophia Kinsella who Emily got me into. She writes the Shopaholic series. The only two of hers that I liked were Can you keep a secret? and The Undomestic Goddess. Both good.

Another one Emily told me about is The Little Lady Agency by Hester Brown. Also good.

Another

A couple of short ones you might like:

Homeless Bird. AMAZING story about a girl in India who gets screwed by her in laws because her husband is on his death bed and they just wanted her dowry to try and get their son better. Its really a quick read but such a good story. I've read it a few times. Its by Gloria Whelan.

The Breadwinner. About a girl who has to dress like a boy during Taliban rule in Afghanistan so she can go outside her house and earn a living for her family. By. Deborah Ellis. There are sequels to the story too if you are interested.

Bloody Jack: Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jack" Faber, Ship's Boy. By Louis A. Meyer. About this street urchin who pretends to be a boy to get a job on board a ship as a ship's boy. She has to keep them from knowing she is a girl. Very good. Also has sequels which weren't as good.

Umm let me know if you need anymore suggestions. Sorry to write a novel. The end.

That wasn't Devin. It was Laura. Devin would have suggested books like
Believing Christ by Stephen Robinson
and 1984 by George Orwell. Smart People books. Bleck.

I really like Shannon Hale, she does young adult, but she has great characters. The Persian Pickle Club was great... loved this one and would totally recommend it. Keturah and Lord Death is another Young Adult one that I enjoyed. If you haven't read These is my words you are missing out...personally anyways. You can check out the blog sisterhoodofthetravelingbooks... they have some good suggestions I have a link to it on my blog - have a fun time Mary

I love that you're prejudice toward Stephanie Meyer..so funny! Even though I loved her books! Big shout out also to 'The other Boleyn girl'. I haven't read the book...but the movie was fantastic. Ditto on the racey-ness...but sooo good! I'll have to read the book!

Have you read the Chronicles of Narnia yet? You'll love it. Really. I dreamed that I was in Narnia almost every night. Also...if you're looking for a good laugh and are even somewhat into politics (I am...don't tell) try Glenn Beck's "An Inconvenient Book." I got a good kick out of it.

Have you ever read The Mitford Series? {Starting with: At Home in Mitford...} I loved them. But some people don't. And they aren't smart books. It's a happy, light, tender story.

Here, here about Bella. I read Eclipse & didn't like it. I only liked Twilight...the end.

Happy reading!

Wow... you seem to have been reading tons! I'll probably take some of your suggestions for reading. ;)

Some suggestions I have are some Nicholas Sparks books (romancy, but too romantical) and Eldest (the first in the trilogy- about dragons). I've been reading lots lately too since I've had a short vacation and I've read those amongst some others that I didn't enjoy as much. ;) Hope that helps.

I just finished reading Catcher in the Rye...I know it's supposed to be high school reading or something, but I'd never read it before. And I can't say I'd recommend it; it was kind of weird and didn't really go anywhere. I guess the "classics" are lost on me.

Sorry, I wish I had something good to recommend. I will take all of these recommendations though. So, thanks for that.

I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird again (thanks Lorelei Barker, sophomore English) and it is still my favorite book. I'm going to name my little girl Scout. P.S. I think Jenae told me once that you thought the name of the book was 'Taquila Mockingbird'. I laugh everytime. And if that wasn't you, let me know who it was because I think it's hilarious!
